TLD Passive Dosimeters
Thermo Fisher Scientific designs and manufactures different types of passive dosimeters, which are available locally from ADM Nuclear Technologies.
Dosimetry, in general, is the measurement of ionising radiation (the harmful type of radiation) absorbed by any object, including the human tissue / human body.
There are two different ways to keep track of ionising radiation through dosimetry: active and passive. Active dosimetry proactively measures and provides real-time dose readings, whereas passive dosimetry collects dose readings over a period (weeks or months) for later evaluation. If you would like to learn more about these two types in detail, you can read our previous blog here.

Thermo Scientific Harshaw TLD Materials
Thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD) materials use crystals that store energy when exposed to radiation. The absorbed radiation dose can be determined by measuring the light emitted from the crystals when they are subjected to heat from a TLD reader.
TLD materials are commonly used in clinical research, personnel safety, environmental, industrial and medical applications.
The following TLD materials are available from Thermo Scientific Harshaw range:
Lithium Fluoride (LiF) Based Materials
- LiF:Mg,Ti (TLD-100, TLD-600, TLD-700) - applications: gamma, beta, neutron monitoring
- LiF:Mg,Cu,P (TLD-100H, TLD-600H, TLD-700H) - applications: low dose, long wear, environmental, personnel safety
Calcium Fluoride Based Materials
- CaF₂:Dy (TLD-200) - application: environmental
- CaF₂:Mn (TLD-400) - application: high-dose environments
Thermo Scientific Harshaw TLD Readers
A TLD reader is a device used to measure the radiation absorbed by TLD materials, which apply heat to release stored energy as light.
The Harshaw TLD reader range has four models available:
-
Harshaw 3500 TLD Reader – designed for reading unmounted dosimeters using a planchet heating method. It reads quickly and accurately with precise temperature control. This reader is suitable for medical, physics, health physics, material research, food irradiation and industrial applications.
- Harshaw 5500 TLD Reader - is an automated, high-capacity hot-gas TLD reader designed for processing unmounted dosimeters. The 5500 model is Ideal for higher volume applications in the medical field, material research and industrial applications. It can also automatically process up to 50 dosimeters per reading session.
- Harshaw 6600 PLUS TLD Reader – is a complete solution for dosimetry services and independent dosimetry labs. It can process whole body, environmental and extremity dosimeters for gamma, beta and neutron dose measurements.
- Harshaw 8800 PLUS TLD Reader - is suitable for dosimetry services and independent dosimetry labs that require high capacity and fast reading capability. The 8800 model can process whole body, environmental and extremity dosimeters for gamma, beta and neutron dose measurements.
Thermo Scientific Harshaw TLD Extremity Dosimeters
Harshaw TLD extremity dosimeters are radiation monitoring devices that can be worn on the body – either on the wrists, fingers or the head. They are available in a variety of materials and with a multiple filtration alternatives to monitor gamma, beta or neutrons.
This range can be processed using TLD reader models 4500, 6600 PLUS or 8800 PLUS with the extremity dosimeter carrier card.
The Harshaw TLD range has two extremity dosimeter formats available:
- EXT-RAD™ Extremity Dosimeter - single or double element chipstrates with attached barcodes
- DXT-RAD™ Extremity Dosimeter – more durable, smaller and easier to wear disk dosimeter that contains an integrated circular barcode
