Wavecontrol Providing World Leading 5G Measurement Methods
ITU-T K Supplement 32
EME Measurement Methods

In 2024, Wavecontrol was formally recognised for making a meaningful contribution to help RF/EME engineers and regulators monitor electromagnetic energy from 5G base towers. This contribution was formerly recognised as Case Study 13 in Supplement 32 of the ITU-T K recommendations (click here to learn more).

Wavecontrol Providing World Leading 5G Measurement Methods
SMP3 Monitoring signals from the in-situ 5G base station

In this study, the Wavecontrol team developed a measurement approach for measuring electromagnetic frequencies emitted by 5G massive MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output) macro base stations. The 5G massive MIMO base stations use beamforming technology to focus radio signals on delivering to the receiving device. This technology is quite efficient, leveraging numerous small antenna elements to improve signal quality, conserve energy, and support multiple users simultaneously on the same frequency.

Wavecontrol created an “in-situ Base Station” that emulates a base station load across three levels — low, medium, and high — each representing different forms of traffic a base station may handle.

Wavecontrol SMP3 Field Monitor

To measure the various levels of traffic output from their in-situ base station, the team used the SMP3 Field Monitor paired with the WPF18 broadband isotropic E-Field probe. This pairing would effectively highlight RF-EMF exposure levels at each traffic level, offering regulators and RF/EME engineers a cost-effective solution for monitoring RF/EME from 5G Base Stations in the field.

Case 13 of the ITU-T K Supplement 32 is a testament of Wavecontrol’s continual commitment to safety in industries where electromagnetic energy presents risks to human health and safety.
